Reading Counts at Bennett's Mill
Welcome to Reading at Bennett’s Mill
The goal of our Reading program is to provide a balanced literacy period consisting of direct instruction in comprehension strategies, word study and fluency. Reading teachers will provide direct instruction in reading skills such as identifying main idea and supporting details, recognizing sequence of events, and making comparisons and predictions. At Bennett’s Mill, our focus will be aimed towards arming students with the skills to become successful in reading passages across the curriculum. With guided support from reading teachers, students will practice these skills as they read passages from literature, science, social studies and math. Students will study Greek and Latin word stems to understand and utilize the building blocks of the English language for vocabulary growth. Students will also read independently in areas of interest for improved fluency. The balanced literacy period offers continued instruction and practice in many of skills necessary to enter high school with the reading proficiency required for success in all subjects. Get Ahead with Summer Reading
Students may earn credit for reading up to three books (or a maximum credit of 450 pages) over the summer.
